Black Fives

Shortly after basketball was invented in 1891, teams were called "fives" in reference to their five starting players.  There were dozens of African-American basketball teams that played before the racial integration of the National Basketball Association from 1904–1950, a period known as the Black Fives Era. These teams were often known as "black fives." As an expression of my love for basketball and appreciation of history, I decided to reimagine what the original Black Fives' logos would look like if designed today.  While embodying the spirit of the original logos, I applied my own "remix" to each design.  These are the first five installments of the redesigns; stay tuned because there's more to see!
