Dare to Dream
Back during my college years at Texas State University–San Marcos (Go Bobcats!), I would read the top professional design magazines—Communication Arts, PRINT, Graphis, and HOW—and flip through the pages inspired and awestruck by the award-winning designs produced by designers from all over the world. I dreamed that one day I would see my work featured and have the opportunity to give that same inspiration I received to other designers.
For several years now, I have been telling myself to enter a design competition. Well after over 8 years of working professionally, I had only entered one competition—that is until earlier this year. I was so super excited about my self-promotional package that I submitted it to HOW Magazine’s Promotion & Marketing Design Awards. I’m so overjoyed because recently I found out that out of 101 award-winning designs and nearly 1,000 entries, my self-promotional project was selected as 1 of 10 Outstanding Achievement winning designs!!! OMG!!! How awesome is that?! I am still so elated, proud, and overjoyed because this is truly a dream come true for me. This project has been years in the making, and I am just so thankful that it all came together for such a time as this.
People often look at the mountain tops of one’s life, but do not pay attention to the valleys one had to go through to get to that high altitude. This award means so much because it is a testament to what you can do when you do not give up and remain true to yourself. While I was in college, I was told by a well-meaning family member that I needed to switch my major from Graphic Design to something “more practical” and that I would never find a job as a Graphic Designer. However, despite the facts—graphic design was, indeed, not a common profession and I did not know any graphic designers—I knew that I knew I was supposed to be a designer, period. I never second guessed it. Thank God I had my own mind and did not listen to any naysayers because here I am today—still designing professionally and loving it! And now to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award from HOW is the icing AND sprinkles on the cake!
